Spartans Dip Into 2004 Pool

When one of the big boys (ala Michigan State) lays an offer to a rising junior from the state of Michigan, it's awfully hard to say no. Drew Neitzel, when put in that situation, wasted little time in deciding.

Spartans Nabs Underclass Point Guard

Add Drew Neitzel to "the list." What is "the list" you ask? Well, it's the running list – that seemingly grows every week – of members of the Class of 2004 who have made commitments.

This week, the Grand Rapids (MI) Wyoming Park point guard committed to Michigan State.

Neitzel's family even thought it was a little early but hey, it's the Spartans and that carried a lot of weight. "With Michigan State, I would say [committing early] would have been a possibility," Craig Neitzel, Drew's father said. "He's real excited and this was the opportunity he wanted."

Last year, Neitzel was named first-team all-state after averaging 24 points, 7.5 assists and 2 steals. He led his team to a 20-3 record. He'll attend the adidas ABCD Camp next week and tour with the Michigan Hurricanes.

Butler made a scholarship offer to Neitzel. But once the Spartans weighed in on the situation, it was over in a hurry. "[Michigan State] said they wanted him to come but for him to take his time," Neitzel's dad said. "The offer would still be there." Drew, of course, wasted little time.

"This is what he wanted."
