Covering Two Memorial Day Events

Memorial Day weekend isn't about beaches, it's about basketball and this time out will provide your recruiting fix as we've got a weekend of fun on the docket. will cover 2 major events!

It's time for the 13th annual Bob Gibbons Tournament of Champions down on Tobacco Road. The biggest news of the week circulating from the event is that they'll be holding the Mayo (O.J. that is) as the D-I Greyhounds and Bill Walker won't be in attendance.

While disappointing, it's not the end of world because this field, which traditionally is one of the best on the spring circuit, has enough headliners to keep even the average hoops junkie occupied for the weekend.

They'll be a lot of Love (Kevin Love, So. Cal All-Stars) in Chapel Hill for the nation's most powerful AAU team from the West Coast.

Joining Love will be a plethora of highly regarded players. You might even say a Legion (see Alex with the Michigan Hurricanes). It'll be a good "Scoop" (Antonio Jardine, Hunting Park) of talent from all over the country.

In fact the field is fit for a King (Taylor King with So Cal) or even a Pope (Herb Pope with the Pittsburgh Jots). will have weekend long coverage from the event but it won't be the only tournament we cover this holiday weekend. Correspondent Evan Daniels is sliding over to Nashville to cover Nike's answer to Memorial Day hoops.

If you're in the Nashville area and watching the NBA playoffs hasn't been enough to fulfill your basketball desires then you might want to head to Ensworth HS to catch some of the best players in the country.

The event kicks off on Saturday at 8 a.m. will run through Monday with the championship game tipping off at 1. Some of the best teams in the country will participate including Boo Williams, SYF Players, The Family and the Houston Hoops.

Boo Williams, which won their own tournament early in April, is oozing with talent and is led by Chris Wright, Patrick Patterson and super-sophomore Ed Davis. Boo Williams will play at 8 a.m. against the Jackson tigers then will play again at 3:30 versus Georgia Elite on Saturday.

The SYF Players have been playing great basketball and E'Tauwn Moore, Robbie Hummel and Scott Martin each saw their stocks rise during the April evaluation period. SYF will face some tough competition in their pool as they will play the D.C. Blue Devils and Mean Streets Express on Saturday.

With a backcourt of Kalin Lucas, Durrell Summers and Copperyale Harris, The Family can play with any team in the country. Speedy Walker's team will play at 11:45 a.m. against Martin Brothers then will match up with the Pulley Panthers at 7:15.

The Texas based Houston Hoops squad, who lost in the championship game of the Arizona Cactus Classic last weekend, will hook up with the Arizona Stars and the New Orleans Panthers in pool play.

The class of 2008 will be well represented in Nashville as Tyreke Evans (Team Final), Xavier Gibson (Georgia Blazers), Greg Monroe (New Orleans Panthers), Samardo Samuels (Metro Hawks) and Ed Davis (Boo Williams) are all scheduled to attend.

Xavier Henry and Oklahoma commit Kyle Hardrick are some class of 2009 prospects to take a look at as well.
