Seahawks Snag Charlotte Guard

Benny Moss has himself a guard. Independence senior Chad Tomko is heading to the beach to play his college basketball.

Charlotte Independence is one of the true football powerhouses on the east coast. Every now and then the school will churn out a high school hoops star. Chad Tomko, a 5-foot-11 combo guard is this year's big name recruit. As of Tuesday, he's headed to the eastern part of the state.

UNC-Wilmington procured a commitment from Tomko after he considered offers from Western Carolina, VCU and Charleston Southern.

"He made the right decision for him," Independence head coach Tony Huggins said. "Chad is one of those guys that thinks he could have went higher. If he would have waited he would have gone higher but that wouldn't be the right fit for him. He's one of those kids who needed to make the right decision."

Huggins praised his guard for thinking through the process, especially when the veteran coach thought he could have gone a little higher up the NCAA pecking order.

"A lot of times kids that are in the same situation as he's in tend to go over their head and it takes them a couple of years at a bigger program to get a shot. I think in his situation going to UNC-W, it's definitely a better fit for him immediately."

The commitment should come as no surprise to Seahawk fans as Moss, a former Charlotte associate head coach, is set to try and mine talent out of the Queen City area.
