New England Elite 75 All-Star A-10 Bound

Matt Hill was a little-known forward out of Cheshire (Conn.) a year ago, but slowly he started to build up a reputation in July. Those that were on the fence ended up offering the long, versatile forward - but it was an A-10 school that wound up getting him.

Just one day before Travis Ford and UMass left for the Bahamas, the Minutemen received a commitment from one of the nation's fastest rising seniors – Matt Hill.

The athletic 6-foot-7, 205-pound Hill earned all-star honors at the New England Elite 75 on Wednesday – one day after giving Ford and his staff the word that he'll be coming to Amherst.

Hill, who spent last season at Cheshire High (Conn.) and will head to Tilton (N.H.) for a post-grad season, said an offer came from UMass in the middle of July and after taking an unofficial visit last week, Hill decided that it was the right fit.

``I like the whole situation," Hill said. "The campus was nice and the coaching staff worked well together. I thought it was impressive how Coach Ford didn't really have to say much and the players knew exactly what to do."

Hill said that schools like Siena, Rhode Island, St. Francis, Rider, Sacred Heart and Quinnipiac all stepped up their interest during the month of July – when Hill stood out while playing with the Connecticut Basketball Club.

``It feels good," Hill said. "It takes a big weight off my shoulders. Now I can just go to prep school and play."

Hill is long, athletic and runs the court well. He is able to step out and make mid-range shots – as he displayed on Wednesday – but will need to get stronger in order to excel in the A-10.
