Southern Headed to ACC

Josh Southern (, No. 74) is headed to the ACC. The 6-foot-9, 240-pound senior big man will make it official today at a news conference and pick an ACC school despite serious interest from a pair of SEC powers.

Josh Southern is headed to the ACC.

The 6-foot-9, 240-pound senior big man out of Saginaw High (Mich.) is expected to commit to Boston College at a news conference on Tuesday afternoon, according to a source close to the situation – and also confirmed by the Saginaw News.

Southern (, No. 74), who averaged 16 points and 16 boards as a junior, chose the Eagles over Kentucky and Tennessee.

``I'm kind of anxious to go there," Southern told the Saginaw News. "My mom (Geraldine Southern) visited Boston with me and she liked it. Even when I was young, I always thought about traveling and seeing other parts of the country. Now I'll be able to do that."

``I like the way Boston uses its big people," he added. "They let their big guys shoot from the outside and run the floor and handle the ball. Those are all my strengths. It's a great fit."

Southern's connection with BC director of operations Preston Murphy didn't hurt the cause, either. Southern and Murphy, who is from Saginaw, are cousins.

Southern gives Boston College an impressive three-man class that also includes Rakim Sanders and Corey Raji.

``Josh is going to a major school in the ACC, a Mecca of basketball," Saginaw coach Lou Dawkins told the newspaper. "He will be able to play the best competition in the country, game in and game out."
