Forward Picks Alabama
It was one of those rare occasions where TheInsidersHoops might have known about the commitment before the new head coach did. On Monday evening after his team lost to BABC in the quarterfinals of the AAU National Championship, Akini Adkins opted to commit.
"I want to tell you that I am going to Alabama," Adkins said. "I love the guys and I know the coach will take care of me as a person and a player." Alabama head coach Mark Gottfried was not in the building but assistant coach Philip Pearson did watch Adkins' final game of the evening.
Adkins and his family said that it was time to make a decision in order to give the other programs recruiting him ample time to search for other targets or move on other players already on their lists.
"I know they have two big guys leaving," Adkins said. "I'll get some playing time as a freshman." Adkins' game has come a long way since he entered the country as a sophomore. According to the introspective forward, so has his thinking.
"I had a big head at first. Then, I got beat pretty bad [in basketball]. But, I had a great family."
Adkins was adopted by John Adkins, the head coach of the Tallahassee Wildcats. He strongly considered Alabama, Tennessee and Florida State. In our travels this summer, the Alabama staff had really been on him hard, often times sending Gottfried himself to the summer games.
The commitment is ‘Bama's second of the year. Earlier in the month they landed big man Jermareo Davidson. Major Wingate and James Lang remain on the target list.
