AAU Nationals, Day Two
Tuesday's Semifinal Matchups
All-Ohio vs. Georgia Stars
Kappa Magic vs. BABC
Dwight Brewington, CG, Metro Boston: Some schools are trying to play defense as programs are starting to really jump into the mix on Brewington. The deaf combo guard is drawing rave reviews because he's consistently making perimeter shots here. He's versatile enough that he can play three positions. Today, against a team from Orlando, Brewington scored 25 points on an efficient 9-14 from the field.
Chris Paul, PG, Kappa Magic: He's being helped by the play of Reyshawn Terry, but make no mistake about it, the Kappa Magic are in the final four because of Paul. Today, against the Newark Rams, there was a stretch where he totally dominated the game and for the most part, did so without scoring. He's so savvy and has such a great feel for the game that he consistently makes the players around him better; the mark of a truly special player.
Off The Dribble
Charlton Christian of the Central Orlando Force team showed today that he's a really good athlete who is probably going to receive a fine mid-major scholarship. … In watching Wesley Green, we again liked him as he made some fine catches and finishes in traffic. What he needs to do is remain active all the time. … The Tallahassee Wildcats Franklin Young has done well for himself here. Coming off what most would consider a sub par Nike showing, he's made some 3s and his stroke has looked a lot better. …
Drew Williamson of the Central Carolina Hornets played a key role in helping his team to an upset win over All-Ohio Red. Williamson banged a handful of 3-pointers, including a few big ones in the second half. … As if he needed to do anything else to convince onlookers, the Arkansas Wings Vakeaton Wafer erupted for 37 points in a game today. He scored 20 in the second half as he unleashed a barrage of 3s. …
The Tallahassee Wildcats have two of the best athletes in the country in Chris Richard and Renaldo Balkman. Richard, a man of many hairstyles, does at least on thing a game just to let you know he's a terrific athlete. Tonight, he dunked a basketball from what appeared to be just a shade inside the low block. He dunked it with authority. Balkman has a super body and really gets out and runs the floor and finishes with power. …
BABC continues its run here in Orlando. If you remember, BABC couldn't buy a tournament title last year; losing in the finals of the Peach Jam and Super Showcase. Will Blaylock led a number of BABC's who scored in double-digits as they pretty much cruised past Tallahassee. … The Charlotte Nets scoring guard Larry Blair posted 27 and over 30 in two games today. … Tallahassee guard Darius Washington hasn't been able to replicate his Vegas success of a week ago. There's more talent on the Tallahassee team and he's not able to have the ball in his hands as much.
