Stephen Sargent, a big man out of Whitewater High (Ga.), will become the first 7-footer in school history after the defensive-minded senior committed while on a visit this past weekend.
``It is the perfect fit for Stephen," said Terry Martin, Sargent's summer coach with the Metro Mavericks and also his stepfather. "He is a kid who'd rather watch the military and history channels than ESPN. It was his dream since he was young to play at a military school."
Sargent, who averaged 10 points, 9 boards and 8 blocks per game as a junior, was also recruited by Belmont, Mercer, West Point, Jacksonville, The Citadel and Appalachian State.
``He really likes the staff at VMI and feels like they have the perfect combination of guys to finish his development," added Martin.
In addition to Sargent, the Keydets also added a pair of Austin, Texas natives who played together on the Centex Shooters.
``Travis is a true power forward who we had to play in the post," Centex coach Chris Blevins said. "He's going to be a great asset for VMI and will bring a lot in terms of leadership."
``Quinn has come a long way and has a terrific mid-range game," added Blevins. "His bread and butter is from 12 to 15 feet."
``Both of them really love the structure and academics that VMI offers," he continued. "Coach Baucom is like family to them now and that's a big reason why they committed."
