Blue Demons Land Guard
Versatile guard Sammy Mejia, a standout with the Long Island Panthers, committed to DePaul late Friday evening.
Mejia had been on an unofficial visit to the Windy City campus and figured it was just the right time to pull out all the stops. "I just felt like it was right," Mejia said. "The coaching staff was great. I get the opportunity to come in and play right away. Dave Leitao is guy that knows what it takes to be successful in every way possible."
Mejia said one of the key elements in his recruitment was that DePaul looked at him as a point guard. The versatile 6-5 Mejia can do a lot of things, thus the reason he received heavy interest from Syracuse, Seton Hall, Miami, Louisville, Rutgers, UConn, South Florida and Florida State.
Last year, Mejia averaged 27 points a game, 7 rebounds and 5 assists. He is the first member of the Class of 2003 to commit to DePaul which has a new staff under Leitao's direction.
