Tigers Score Juco Center

The Louisiana State Tigers went big, real big. John Brady's crew dipped into the junior college pool of talent to land its latest score: a 6-foot-9 frontcourt standout.

When Louisville and Kentucky didn't come calling Desmond Hendrix went looking. What he found was LSU and they were willing to make a scholarship offer. Actually, they weren't alone.

"They're in the SEC," Hendrix, a Wabash Valley Junior College standout said. "I was born in the SEC so why not go back? LSU's a very good school in a good conference; I think the toughest league."

The 6-foot-9, 250 pounder is a prospect with upside, something the junior colleges have been lacking since the emergence of prep powerhouses around the nation. Hendrix was under the radar until last summer. "I didn't even start last year," he quipped.

"This summer my coach had a lot of schools coming in to watch us workout. We kept on working out and more and more coaches came in. LSU came in and watched us go up and down a couple of games and they started recruiting me."

UNLV, Pittsburgh and Oklahoma State liked him a lot too but LSU locked him down.

"I'm a lot better (than last year). I'm scoring more and driving to the rim and rebounding better."
