Valentine Makes Winthrop's Day

George Valentine, one of the better mid-major regional big men, is headed to Winthrop. Valentine ended his recruitment Friday afternoon.

Gregg Marshall's Winthrop program continues to move forward. On Friday, Fayetteville (N.C.) Seventy-First power forward George Valentine committed to the program.

For Valentine, the school's post-season success was a big selling point.

"It was their winning streak; I like to win," Valentine told "Coach Marshall and Coach Peele are great and I really liked the school.

"They just win and they press a lot. I love to press."

Valentine was eagerly sought after by the likes of Delaware, East Carolina and Holy Cross.

Valentine, who averaged 10 points a game as a junior, emerged this summer when he stood out with the Charlotte Royals. "My confidence was higher. I'm not hesitating a lot like I did last year. I felt like I needed to step up."

Mission accomplished.
