UMass Lands 2008 Wing Prospect

UMass struck with a commitment this weekend and it wasn't a senior. Travis Ford and Co. scored a pickup in the Class of 2008.

David Gibbs, a 6-foot-3 shooting guard out of Simsbury (Conn.) The Masters School, is a member of Travis Ford's Class of 2008 at Massachusetts.

"I think the location and the history back in the day when Marcus Camby was there were big," J.R. Hargreaves, Gibbs' AAU coach, told "He kind of wanted to stay in New England and liked the staff at UMass."

Penn State and Georgetown had begun the initial evaluation process with Gibbs but UMass moved swiftly to secure the commitment. Gibbs ran with the Connecticut Basketball Club last spring and summer.

"Coach Ford said he could play 1 thru 3 and he's a top of the box type athlete who blocks shots and his hops are ridiculous," Hargreaves said.

Gibbs was on campus for Midnight Madness in Amherst.
