Withey, a 7-foot, 220-pound junior from San Diego Horizon High (Calif.), committed to Louisville prior to going to school on Wednesday morning.
``He's a Hall of Fame coach," Withey said of Pitino. "You can't really beat him as a coach."
``I also have a pretty good relationship with (assistant coach) Marvin Menzies," Withey added. "I just feel that Louisville is the right place for me."
Withey said that Kansas was the other finalist. Withey took an unofficial visit to Louisville about a month ago and went to Kansas last weekend for Midnight Madness.
``I felt like Coach Pitino would help me get to the NBA," Withey said. ``When I went to Louisville, I loved the campus and the facilities."
Withey is a guy who will need to continue to bulk up, but he's got two seasons to do so prior to landing at Louisville. His defense is further ahead of his offense – and he's one of the better shot-blockers in the junior class.
Withey averaged 13 points, 11 boards and nearly 5 blocks per game last season.
``I want to improve my outside shooting and my dribbling," Withey said. "Now I can focus on getting better. The decision took a load off my chest."
