2008 Introduction: Marques Coleman

The 2008 West Coast class of point guards is shaping up to be one of the better groups in recent years. Marques Coleman showed last weekend in Arizona that he'll be in the group the next time we update our rankings...

Marques Coleman, 6-3 JR PG Glendale (Ariz.) Cactus, had a very good showing last weekend at the Arizona Preps Fall Showcase. Coleman has an excellent feel for the game and he's a pure point. He has very good vision and he's a terrific passer. His outside shot does need work and that's an area he'll need to improve upon in the next couple years. If he can become an adequate shooter, we believe he's a definite high major prospect.

We spoke with Coleman recently and asked about the schools that have shown the most interest in him so far.

"Arizona State, Cal, Colorado State, Oregon, Stanford, Washington State, St. Mary's and UC Irvine," said Coleman.

When questioned about the schools that have sent coaches to see him at Cactus, Coleman replied, "Arizona State, Cal, Colorado State, Irvine and I think another one," said Coleman.

Coleman said one school, in particular, is very high on his list.

"I really like Stanford," said Coleman. "The academics are great, it's a good school with tradition and I like the coach."

We asked Coleman about some issues that might affect his choice.

"Location doesn't really matter," said Coleman. "As for early playing time, it depends on the school. If I went someplace like Stanford, I wouldn't care as much about playing early. Maybe at a lower level school, I'd want to play early."

When asked if he sees himself choosing a college before or after next summer, Coleman replied, "I'd like to do it early so I know where I'm headed."

Coleman told us he currently has a 3.9 GPA.
