Smalligan Headed To Butler

Last week, East Grand Rapids senior center Jamie Smalligan took a road trip. After visiting four schools unofficially, he made a commitment on Monday.

Jamie Smalligan, a 6-11 member of the Michigan Mustangs, committed to Butler on Monday. "I love all the coaches and love the facilities. It's a great campus and a great school. My AAU coach called them in beginning of July and they saw me play in New York and Las Vegas."

Smalligan selected Butler over Bowling Green, Toledo, Bradley, Stanford and West Virginia. "I was supposed to take some official visits but after visiting that school I felt like I didn't need to." Last week, Smalligan toured Bowling Green, Butler, Toledo and Bradley on his own dime.

As a junior he averaged 10 points and 8 rebounds. "It will be a lot better this year," Smalligan said. "It was a new coach and we didn't really play a big man's game."

Butler hadn't been recruiting Smalligan that long but his interest in their program shows just how far Butler has come. "They recruit selectively. I'm the third commitment from this class out of five [scholarships]. That's one of the reasons why I came here." Butler's other 2003 recruits are Nick Brooks and Brandon Crone.
