Drew Viney Changes His Mind

Drew Viney, one of the top small forwards in the west for 2007, has had a change of heart and decommitted from Cal. Instead, Viney will look at another Pac-10 program that recently received a commitment from Viney's best friend...

Drew Viney, 6-6 SR SF Villa Park (Calif.) High, has decommitted from Cal, according to his mother, Mona Viney.

We spoke with Mrs. Viney this morning about her son's decommitment.

"Drew told Coach Braun two days ago that he had decided to decommit," said Mrs. Viney. "Drew and Kamyron Brown are best friends and they've always wanted to go to college together. But when they didn't have any schools in common on their lists, Drew decided to commit to Cal. Obviously, Cal is a great school and program. And Coach Braun is just a wonderful person. He obviously was disappointed by Drew's decision, but he understood that this was Drew's dream."

Mrs. Viney went on to say, "Drew really wanted to play with Kamyron, and when Kamyron chose Oregon -- a school that had recruited Drew earlier -- then Drew decided he wanted to explore that option."

Mrs. Viney stressed that her son has not opened up his recruitment.

"Drew has decommitted from Cal, but he has not opened up his recruitment to other schools," said Mrs. Viney. "Right now, he's just looking at Oregon. He's going to take an official visit there next weekend. But he hasn't committed to Oregon yet. He's met the assistant coaches, but he hasn't met Coach Kent yet."
