Marquette Scores Prep Forward

Notre Dame Prep has been good to Marquette the last two seasons. This time around the Golden Eagles scored a 6-foot-7 recruit out of the school.

Tom Crean and the Marquette Golden Eagles added another recruit this week.

The Golden Eagles, for the second year in a row, went to Notre Dame Prep for a player. Last season, Lazar Hayward was the Golden Eagles golden boy out of Notre Dame. This time around its combo forward Damian Saunders.

The 6-foot-7, 190 pounder picked Marquette over Providence in a tight race.

"They had him out on the visit and they came and watched him in the open gym," Notre Dame coach Bill Barton said. "They were impressed with his athleticism and his attitude.

"We're big fans of Marquette because of all they've done for Lazar. He liked the kids and the facilities."

Saunders will be expected to play a duel role for the Golden Eagles. A Top 25 post grad player, he's one of those kids who came on late.

"A lot of schools came out to see him and most schools thought he was going to wait until late. I don't think he was the top guys on a lot of lists but they saw something in him and I think he'll be rewarded."
