Post Summer Rankings: 2003 PFs

With the emergence of a couple players, the power forward list for 2003 is a little deeper than it was prior to summer. Nick Fazekas and Marcus Slaughter both played their way into the top ten of our rankings...

Leon Powe couldn't play this summer due to an ACL injury, but we didn't see anyone this summer who deserved to be ranked ahead of Powe on the power forward list. You could also make the argument that Powe is really the only true power forward in this year's top ten. He's got the low-post game inside, while his long arms, intensity and quick feet make him a very effective rebounder. Ekene Ibekwe has probably as much upside as any player on this list. Long and athletic, Ibekwe needs only to realize that he's a post player and not a wing. If he learns to play on the low block, at both ends, and plays with a little more consistent effort, Ibekwe has a chance to be an impact player at the high major level. Perhaps the biggest surprise of the summer, Marcus Slaughter wowed coaches with his performance in July. He's got a very good basketball body, he's extremely active and he has an excellent feel for the game (underrated passer). Kyle Jeffers appears to be an unfinished product physically. He's got a baby face and looks like he could get a lot bigger and stronger. He's got good hands, a developing low-post game and we like his effort level. Once he matures physically, we believe he'll be an effective player at the high major level. Nick Fazekas is as skilled offensively as any player on this list. He still needs to fill out and get stronger, but he's got great hands and a terrific stroke from all over the court.
