Beach Ball Blog

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Day 2 at the Beach Ball Classic should be a dandy. We're courtside so we can report on a full slate of games, encounters and the latest buzz from the beach!

9:58 As my son would say, "All Done!" The bus has been started and we're on the move. The four-hour ride to Raleighwood awaits. This closes the book on our coverage from the Beachball but opens the chapter on the GSK Invitational!

9:48 Blog Over. Myrtle Beach proved its reputation for hospitality as Henry Sims makes another jump shot. 55-26 with 8:11 remaining.

9:40 Press Row Debate: freshmen PGs in the Baltimore-DC area. Kendall Marshall or Eric Atkins of Mt. St. Joe's? Tough call, both should pan out and become legit players.

9:22 Dino Gregory just turned in a sweet half of basketball with 15 points on 6-for-7 from the field. He's not a big name but you better believe Gary Williams will put that chip on Gregory's shoulder to use and he'll contribute in Terp Land.

9:16 Miller Alert! There's another one in the pipeline and go figure, he can shoot it! Matt Miller from Mt. St. Joe's. He's got Archie's height and maybe the stroke too.

9:07 Myrtle Beach is in trouble. Henry Sims and Dino Gregory are wearing them out in the high-low set. Host team on the ropes 10-0 and it may get very ugly.

8:12 Delvon's done. St. Edwards in a romp and he sat down with plenty of time to go. Ended up with 12 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists.

7:41 Slow start for Roe but he's changed his approach. With a renewed energy level St. E's is up 39-26 at the half. Before this sentence ended he dropped a sweet jump hook.

7:15 St. Edward's is up 15-4 in the first half. Quick gym scan reveals Ohio State and North Carolina sent assistants for Delvon Roe.

7:02 Blowout city: Scott County by 30. Mackey didn't shoot it well but came up with 16. Anxious to see him again and learn more.

A Real Pirate!
6:01 You can't make this up. There was an older gentleman breaking it down to James Brown at halftime of the Scott Co. game. Good for him. After he was done, a pirate (right) was passing out coupons for food. Stuff you don't see every day.

5:39 10 minute evaluation on Bud Mackey: live bodied guard with a big upside. Should be a game he dominates.

5:35 Random thought on Luke Babbitt. When asked what position he's comfortable at, the Galena forward chose as excellent response. While many players like him could be inclined to say "shooting guard" he indicated he's a power forward, maybe a three man.

5:15 Ugly game. Bishop O'Connell survives against Chaminade-Madonna as the teams combined for an eye-poppinig 46 turnovers! Freshman Kendall Marshall made a series of plays in the 2nd half and scored 13 points for the winners.

3:12 Comeback complete. Down 9 at the half, Galena rides Babbitt and the hot hand of Tristan Hill to victory. 37 for Rios, 26 for Babbitt.

2:42 Watch the Beachball Classic LIVE and be sure to see the bald spot on the top of my dome.

2:12 Edwin Rios just made his 5th 3-pointer in the first 9 minutes of his game against Galena. Babbitt checked into the game midway through the half.

1:50 Surprising beginning to the day. Galena's Luke Babbitt didn't start but a quick check of the roster indicates Coach Tom Maurer went with 5 seniors.

1:39 Pre-game musical selections included Buster Poindexter's "Hot, Hot, Hot" and C & C Music Factory. It's 8 minutes before tip-off and Cindy Lauper's "Girl's Wanna Have Fun" is rocking. "I have to admit, it's a guilty pleasure," Prepstars.com's Rob Harrington said. "I kind of like that song."

1:14 It's not on the level of the Texas Bookstore, but the Beach Ball Classic merchandise tent is the largest these eyes have seen on the high school scene. There's an assortment of gear there but we couldn't find any infant equipment for the little fella at home. Maybe next year.

12:40 Ro Russell, the AAU coach of Sam Ashaolu was courtside today. He worked the Duquesne forward out recently and reports that he's doing great. Russell also indicated that LSU leads for junior forward Olu Ashaolu and he's thinking about Syracuse and Rutgers as options close to home.

12:35 How's this for a career path? Let's start with tournament director of the Beach Ball Classic and then AAU coach of Raymond Felton. John Rhodes' next job? Our friend is presently the mayor of Myrtle Beach!

12:30 p.m. Entered the building for a 1:45 game. It's going to be a long day and securing a prime seat is the key.
