2008 Introduction: Klay Thompson

Klay Thompson comes from a basketball family. The 6-5 junior wing from Southern California has an older brother headed to the West Coast Conference and a father who was a standout player in the NBA for many years...

Klay Thompson, 6-5 JR SF/SG Rancho Santa Margarita (Calif.) Santa Margarita, is a skilled wing who might play the three or two in college. Thompson has a very nice stroke to 20-22 feet and solid overall ball skills. Thompson's father Mychael was a standout player in the NBA for a number of years and his older brother, Mychael, Jr., will be playing at Pepperdine next year.

We spoke with Thompson recently at the Torrey Pines tournament and asked about the schools he has been hearing from to date.

"Georgia, Arizona State, Pepperdine, Oregon State, Washington, Minnesota and Arizona," said Thompson.

We asked if any schools stand out for him at this time.

"I really like Pepperdine -- my brother will be there," said Thompson. "Also, Georgia, Arizona State and Oregon State -- those are probably my top four."

We asked Thompson what he is looking for in a college.

"I want to stay somewhat close to home," said Thompson. "I like the Oregon schools -- I'm from there and came here in the 8th grade. I'd like to play in a big-time conference. Early time is not really a big deal. I don't care if I play a lot in my freshman year, but I'd like to play by my sophomore year."

We asked Thompson how his parents feel about his potential college choices.

"My Dad wants to me to follow my brother to Pepperdine," said Thompson. "He feels we play well together. But it will be up to me."

Thompson doesn't sound like he's ready to choose a school anytime soon.

"I want to take my time," said Thompson. "I'll probably see how my summer goes and decide by the beginning of my senior year."

Thompson told us he has yet to receive any scholarship offers. He said his GPA is in the range of 2.8 to 3.0.
