Ubaka Picks California
Ayinde Ubaka completed what stands as a very impressive five-man recruiting haul by Ben Braun and the California Golden Bears.
On Thursday night, Ubaka gave word that he would become Cal's point guard of the future. A confident player with a nice mid-range game and nose for the position, Ubaka received interest from Arizona, Missouri, San Diego State and Oregon.
Ubaka ranked among our Top 75 players in the nation and is listed among the Top 10 point guards in the country.
He joins a group that includes power forward Leon Powe, small forward Marquise Kately, shooting guard Wesley Washington and small forward Dominic McGuire.
Kately committed last season to the Bears but failed to qualify. Now, he's prepping at Maine Central and will take Cal's fifth scholarship if he can take care of things academically.
"I think Leon started it," Oakland Slam ‘n Jam coach Calvin Andrews said. "Leon wanted to go there so bad that he just started hammering on these guys. I think Ayinde saw the positives and just said ‘I'm coming.'"
California is positioning itself to reload after a loses a group of seniors this year and should recover nicely from the early departure of Jamal Sampson to the NBA.
