However, on the other hand, Bennie Rhodes left open the possibility of attending college next fall as a member of the Class of 2007. On Thursday morning, he made the decision to attend college next fall. He then committed to SMU.
"My family has been interested in SMU and we wanted to make sure it's the perfect fit," Rhodes said. "What got me excited was Coach Doherty, the city and the area. The players he's bringing in (are good) and I like what he's doing with the program."
Rhodes, a California native, was an all-league selection last season at Castlemont High in California. He turns 18 in April.
In Dallas, Rhodes has some extended family and has been on SMU's campus for an unofficial visit. "My family has been interested in SMU and we wanted to make sure it's the perfect fit."
The Mustangs class just added a new dimension to the group. Rhodes is a multi-position guard and that's exactly how the Mustangs plan on using him. "He's going to put the ball in my hands and let me come in right away and play and make an impact."
When it comes to comparisons, Rhodes has tried to draw inspiration from a few players. "I'm like to model my game after Penny Hardaway but I hear a lot of people say that I play like somebody else, kind of like Francisco Garcia when he was at Louisville or a Brandon Roy type of player."
