Miners Strike Spring Treasure

Claude Britten was one of the top centers on the board. Now he's committed and part of Tony Barbee's excellent recruiting class.

Tony Barbee's UTEP Miners drilled a little deeper to find Claude Britten and may have struck spring signing period gold.

On Monday, Claude Britten, a 6-foot-10 native of Louisiana, pledged to Barbee's program. He also had an offer from South Florida which recently fired its basketball coach.

UTEP moved swiftly and locked down the big center that plays at Genesis One but attended Southern Lab in Baton Rouge the previous season.

"They needed a big man and I think I can step right in," Britten said. "I liked the coach and they thought they could get me to the next level."

Britten is an excellent addition to an already strong Miners recruiting class. Manuel Cass, Wayne Portalatin, Randy Culpepper and Malcoln Kirkland insure that the cupboard has been re-stocked.

Britten will be ready to rock once he hits campus. "I'm a little bit like Shaq but I can step back and shoot the jumper. I play hard on defense and offense."
