Good Get For UMass

Massachusetts needs two things out of the Class of 2003 – a shooting guard and a big man – and coach Steve Lappas and the Minutemen got the first piece to that puzzle this weekend.

Artie Bowers decided on Saturday night that he wanted to make the Atlantic 10 his collegiate home. The 6-3 SG from Newark (NJ) St. Benedict's committed to UMass over interest from Notre Dame, Rutgers, Seton Hall, UConn, Pittsburgh, St. John's, Villanova and Wake Forest.

The Delaware native spent the summer running on the adidas circuit with Jim Salmon's Tim Thomas Playaz. He averaged 16 points a game last year for coach Danny Hurley's St. B's squad.

With Bowers in the hopper – not to mention the five current freshmen taken out of last year's class – the focus for Lappas and his assistants now shifts to the big guys.

Some of the possibilities on the UMass board: NJ (via Africa) PF Mbainai Narmbaye, NY C Rafael Madera and MD PF Will Thomas.

Hassan Fofana, a product of the African nation of Togo, is still a target as well – although as a longshot. Fofana, who played last year in Worcester, Mass., is spending his senior season at Chatham (VA) Hargrave Military Academy.

Another longshot is Dedham (MA) Noble and Greenough C Courtney Sims.
