"And like 10 calls from college coaches … and new coaches," Lucas joked Tuesday night. One new coach visited him over the weekend. That coach was none other than Kentucky's Billy Gillispie.
"We just sat down and talked and went over the technicalities," Lucas said. "He told me what he felt about me but said he didn't think he could get me at Texas A&M. Now he's in a situation where he can really use me. We had a great sit down. I was very pleased with it."
That, folks, would be a stroke of good news for UK fans. Now, here's the other side of the coin: Lucas is taking his final official visit to Florida this weekend. "After that I'll probably wait until after the Jordan game (to announce)."
The Gators, the two-time defending national champs, have a way of making up ground on recruits these days? Go figure.
"Florida has always been kind of in the background," Lucas said. "Coach Donovan always said he didn't want to come after me unless it was the right situation. With Taurean Green making the jump it would be something I have to look it."
Lucas, as it has been well documented, is also considering Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and the Maryland Terrapins. His good friend Patrick Patterson, the nation's top unsigned recruit, has two schools in common with Lucas: Florida and Kentucky.
So, the legitimate next question is predictable: will these guys go to school together?
"I think it's a real good chance," Lucas said. "We really feel that we'll be a pretty good tandem in college basketball. It's something we're seriously considering doing."
Lucas liked Kentucky when Tubby Smith was the head coach and learned a lot about the program. With Gillispie there and him being from Texas, Lucas has a working knowledge of the coach and the program. Speaking of Smith, the Gophers tried to make a play for him too but they aren't in the mix right now.
"Nothing really with Minnesota," Lucas said. "I talked to Coach Smith and he wants me to think about it. It seems like every college coach in America is calling me and I want to put some closure to it. I don't want to drag this thing out forever."
