Ed Nixon, a 5-A all-state wing out of St. Pete Lakewood, committed to the Rams after visiting over the weekend.
Nixon, who had serious interest from places like Georgia and Jacksonville and a host of others. He carried his team to the state final where it fell to Lake Howell which sported another VCU recruit, Joey Rodriguez, at the point guard position. All totaled, VCU will add 5 players from the Sunshine State in this recruiting class alone.
Grant's presence in Florida as an assistant coach under Billy Donovan, plus having a staff familiar with the turf, has made an impact on the team's recruiting class and with Nixon. "It was a tremendous impact because Coach Grant established those relationships in the state of Florida," Jacksonville Lee Bulls coach Ryan Delafield said.
"His connections helped get him going and the state has great talent. These guys are mid-major talents and they're going to go out there and play hard for him. It's a great situation for him."
Nixon had a tremendous season for Lakewood. A natural wing player at 6-foot-3, he's a 3-star recruit for Scout.com.
"I think they'll use him as a scorer. He'll be someone who is attacking the basket. He's got a mid-range game and he's got the package. At VCU, they'll build on the success they had last year and it'll be a great situation for him. Plus, he's a winner. He won a state title as a sophomore and lost in the title game this year. "
The Rams will sign Nixon and Highland Springs guard Brandon Rozzell during the early period.
Jacksonville Lee Bulls director David Jones suffered a stroke on his way to the Real Deal on the Hill. Jones is resting comfortably at a hospital near his home.
