Tirrell Baines C-USA Bound

Tirrell Baines had plenty of high-major programs in pursuit. The 6-foot-6 senior forward at The Patterson School (N.C.) made his decision and signed on Monday - and he went with a first-year head coach.

Donnie Jones enjoyed plenty of success over the past two seasons as an assistant coach at Florida. Now the new Marshall coach is getting things done on the recruiting trail.

A couple of weeks after landing a commitment from senior combo guard Matt Walls, the Thundering Herd beat out other high-major programs when Patterson (N.C.) senior forward Tirrell Baines chose Marshall.

The 6-foot-6, 210-pound Baines, who averaged 13.5 points and 10.5 boards per game last season, opted to commit to Jones and his staff over Mississippi, Seton Hall and DePaul.

``They have a lot of tradition and Coach Jones and his staff are a terrific bunch of guys," Baines said. "I think I can really help them a lot."

Baines is an undersized power forward who consistently outworks the opposition. He's a guy who will need to improve his skill level in college, but he's extremely active on the glass, runs the court well and excels in transition.

``It's a perfect situation for Tirrell," added Patterson coach Chris Chaney. "He's going to play for someone who very reputable in Donnie Jones. As good a player as Tirrell is, he's an even better person."

``He'll help springboard the program to the next level," Chaney continued."
