Nathen Garth Headed to Big Ten

Nathen Garth was interested in the local school, but they were hot and cold with him. The California native and Woodrow Wilson (Texas) High standout guard went with the coach who has been on him the hardest.

Nathen Garth, a 6-foot-3 junior point guard at Woodrow Wilson (Texas) High, has committed to Minnesota.

``The opportunity I have in front of me is what made me decide," said Garth, a California native who spent this past year in Dallas. ``I felt that they wanted me as much as I wanted them."

Garth, who averaged 18 points and nine assists this past season, also considered California.

``I'm hoping that Coach (Tubby) Smith can help me improve as much as he did for so many other players he's coached," Garth said. "I'm hoping he can help get me to the next level."

Garth said that Smith's persistence, especially after taking over at Minnesota, was important.

``I just felt comfortable with him and the situation," Garth said. "They don't have a lot of guards in the program, so I feel like I can make an impact."
