2009 Introduction: Hollis Thompson

Hollis Thompson, a 6-6 sophomore wing from Southern California, didn't have much of a rep prior to this past weekend. But a series of strong performances at the Cactus Classic showed that Thompson has a chance to be one of the elite wings in his class...

Hollis Thompson, 6-6 SO SF Los Angeles (Calif.) Loyola, was one of the surprises of the Cactus Classic. We saw Thompson back in December with his high school team and, while he was long and pretty athletic, he wasn't very skilled. What a difference five months can make. Thompson's ball skills have improved dramatically and he's now a threat from the perimeter. If he continues to improve at this rate, Thompson has a chance to be one of the top small forwards in the class of 2009.

We spoke with Thompson in Arizona and asked about the schools that he's considering.

"UCLA, Georgetown, Stanford, USC, Florida or even Arizona or UConn," said Thompson. "UCLA is showing a lot of interest."

When we asked if he has a favorite, Thompson replied "my favorites are Georgetown and UCLA."

Thompson talked a little about the factors he'll consider when choosing a school.

"A good basketball program, a good coach, the campus and atmosphere, and also the academics," said Thompson. "I don't care about the location. Early playing time would definitely be a big factor."

We asked Thompson if he has a timeframe for picking a school.

"I'd like to do it earlier rather than later," said Thompson.

Thompson has been to local schools UCLA and USC, but he's also visited another school on his list.

"I've been to Georgetown," said Thompson. "When I was a freshman, we went to a tournament in Virginia and we took a visit to the Georgetown campus.

An excellent student, Thompson told us he has a 4.1 GPA.
