Gibbons TOC: Day 1 Rundown

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Friday night at the Bob Gibbons Tournament of Champions belong to Scotty Hopson. The future Mississippi State standout dropped 35 points in his opener and commanded center stage.

Scotty Hopson, SF, Mid-State Ballerz – Yesterday, Hopson slammed a finger on his shooting hand in a car door. After his 35 point opening night effort, we suggested the entire team have a door slamming ceremony.

Hopson's 35 Were Impressive (J.Hawkins)
Hopson scored it every way imaginable as the entire package was on full display. Mississippi State has itself a potential star and if he commits himself just a little on defense he could be in line to be a high school all-american; he's that talented.

Eloy Vargas, PF, Team Breakdown – Against one of the premier athletes in the class, Vargas got it done. He outscored Terrence Jennings 25 to 16 and hit him with counters inside while busting 3s on the perimeter. This was vintage Vargas and we've seen it before. String together a few more of these and he's on his way.

Romero Osby, F, SE Elite – Physically he's cut up, 6-foot-8 and strong. Right now his comfort zone would appear to be on the perimeter though he did face a zone most of the first half anyway. Capable of stepping behind the line and also attacking from mid-range. Would like to see more from him on the blocks or inside. This spring, we rated him aggressively based on his outstanding high school season.

Derrick Favors, C, Atlanta Celtics – Against King of the Court 16's, Favors was a handful. There wasn't an answer for him and when he wanted to score he did. Total mismatch and he pretty much handled his business as such.

Team Breakdown sophomore Kenny Boynton's outstanding spring appears to have ground to a half. A turned ankle is likely to keep him out of action the remainder of this event. Boynton played only 8 minutes in the opener. …
