"It's possible," the stocky Ravens floor general said Saturday afternoon here at the Hoop Group's Fall Jam Fest on the campus of Seton Hall. "Going down there, with Gary there, I could trust him.
"I understand him. He understands me. But it wouldn't only be because of Gary. Coach (Jerry) Wainwright is great. It's a nice campus, from what I'm told, and I think they can be a Top 25 team this year."
Richmond is the only school that has gotten an official visit set. Merritt is scheduled to spend some time with the Atlantic 10 program the second weekend of October.
But UR is hardly the only school recruiting Merritt. Pittsburgh and Providence are still hot on his trail. Merritt still lists N.C. State and DePaul.
He'll make more officials in October, he said Saturday, although he hasn't made any actual plans. But he does know that he wants to take those so he can make a fall commitment and take care of business in the November signing period.
"Sometimes I'm day to day on that, but I would like to knock it out," Merritt said. "I want to be able to focus on my high school season."
Even without DeCesare on the sidelines.
"We're going to stick with the same sets, the same plays, the same workouts," the senior leader said. "But it's doing to be different looking over there and not seeing him there."
