Wayns To The Big East

Don't forget about the juniors. While seniors from the Class of 2009 commit almost daily, juniors like Maalik Wayns are now popping.

Jay Wright knows guards. Maalik Wayns understands that Villanova is cranking them out at a pretty high rate. For the 5-foot-11 floor general out of Philly's Roman Catholic High, it was the perfect match.

"Villanova is my dream school," Wayns said. "I like the coaches and the way they play. They offered and I jumped on it. That's what I'm comfortable with."

West Virginia, Pittsburgh and Virginia were pursuing him and wanted unofficial visits. However, as his profile increased, his passion for the Wildcats grew more intense. "I considered (other schools)," Wayns said. "But, I knew if I was good enough to play in the Big East Villanova was where I wanted to go."

A four-star recruit per Scout.com, Wayns averaged 13 points, 5 rebounds and 4 dimes as a sophomore. He said the commitment to his dream school won't do anything but fire him up and keep him focused.

"I still got stuff to prove. I've had a good spring and summer but I'm underrated a little and I've got to go out there and prove myself."

Last week at the NBA Players Camp, Wayns proved his point. He ran his team like a veteran and showed that he's a high-major point guard from the Class of 2009.
