Triple S Shootout: Day 1

MORGANTOWN, WVa.– The Triple S Harley Davidson JamFest tipped Saturday on West Virginia's campus. We stumbled onto a few new names as the field weeds out the weaker teams in preparation for a strong stretch run.

Francis Cedric Martel, SF/SG, Sun Youth – This kid is what these events are operated for. The Canadian has zero offers which is astounding because his team routinely offers up a Division I player and he's a talent. Athletic and smart, he dropped two passes of high level and they throw him oops. We'd like to catch his act once more but there's a player in that frame.

Ravenel Has Motor
Evan Ravenel, PF, Tampa Fast Break – One of those workhorse type guys. He can out of the gates with tons of energy and couldn't muster the same effort in both halves. He's a player to mid-range and has a motor for sure.

Brian Benson, PF, East Coast Fusion – We were surprised his crowd wasn't bigger. His first half was a complete dud. In the second he showed the promise. From busting shots deep to the dunks inside this is a potential mid-level player in time. His body needs work but the long term gain is worth the investment.

Isaiah Philmore, PF, Delaware Sharpshooters – He put up the biggest number of the day – 34 points. What we appreciate about him is the motor. He's a very hard playing kid and an adept passer. He's been coached and understands and does the major things to make you take notice and respect him as a player. He'll be on the fence between mid and high-major through the season.

Ben Boggs, SG, East Coast Fusion – We think realistically he'll begin as a mid level program and have the bigs tagging him for the next year. His shot is what gets the colleges excited as he's a perimeter kid with size. The game is trying to make sure it never again passes on a shooter like the one Florida rode in the championship game and for that reason Boggs will be on the radar.

Daryl Traynham, PG, Assault – Not sure what his final numbers were (his team lost in double-OT) but the sub-six-footer lined up a half courter and drilled it to tie the game up and get into an extra session.

Maurice Sutton indicated that Marquette is on him the hardest and making him notice the program. Clemson, Duquesne, Miami and Tulane are mixing it up with him too. …

Bryant Irwin is a solid mid-level power forward prospect who is being chased by tons of mid-majors. …

Francis Cedric Martel doesn't really have a school list yet but he will. Vermont, Winthrop and Albany are aware of him. . .. Evan Ravenel has Tulane, Florida Atlantic, Duquesne, Wichita State, Tennessee Tech and South Florida on his list. Northeastern has offered as well. …

Darius Miller's crowd in the afternoon: Bob Huggins, Billy Gillispie, Bruce Weber, Rick Pitino and assistants from Texas, Ohio State and Minnesota. … Michigan and Virginia Tech sent head coaches to watch Ben Boggs. Davidson had two staffers there. …
