Major Joins Vols Army
On Wednesday, Major Wingate made a commitment to an SEC school. He selected Buzz Peterson's Volunteers over Clemson.
At one point in the recruiting process, Wingate was thought to be considered property of South Carolina. Wingate's former high school coach in Florence and Gamecocks head coach Dave Odom are very close. However, Wingate transferred to North Gwinnett High in Georgia for his senior season.
Earlier in the week, Clemson was thought to be the leader but our sources indicated that Tennessee closed the gap quickly and swiftly. Wingate joins guard Dane Bradshaw as the other high school member of the Volunteers Class of 2003.
Once considered the top prospect in the Class of 2003, Wingate's stock took a hit over the last two seasons. However, no one has ever disputed the talent level that he possesses. Peterson will be charged with reinventing Wingate, rekindling his competitive fire and getting the maximum out of him.
At 6-9, the big fella has shown a touch from the perimeter but during his days as a dominant freshman and sophomore he exerted himself with his great frame on the glass and in the paint.
