Carter Picks The Gophers

Paul Carter made his mark at a JUCO event a few weeks ago and it didn't take him long to reel in the scholarship offers. On Wednesday, he made his college decision and committed to Minnesota.

While at a JUCO Top 120 camp, Minnesota and a number of other coaches laid their eyes on 6-foot-8, 190-pound Paul Carter. The JUCO product showed off an impressive game and earned scholarship offers from a handful of high majors.

"There were several scouts there, including Tubby Smith and his coaching staff," Carter said. "They saw me play three or four games and immediately after the camp they showed a lot of interest and they contacted me, but a lot of other schools did also."

On Wednesday, Carter accepted one of those scholarship offers. The Missouri State University-West Plains CC product is headed to the University of Minnesota.

"Coach Smith came in when he was allowed to come in during the recruiting time and talked to me for a brief second," he said. "They sent me a lot of mail and I always grew up a Tubby Smith fan at Kentucky, so I thought he'd be a good guy to play for."

Carter also picked up heavy interest from Baylor, Wyoming, Kansas State and Oregon, but the relationship he developed with Coach Smith sealed the deal.

"Actually meeting Coach Smith, I realized he's not just a great coach, but also a great person. Just talking to him, and finding out what kind of man he is and being around him he's just a true role model and a true example as a coach."

Carter, who made his commitment without ever visiting Minnesota, will play his first year of Junior College ball this year, as he red-shirted last season at Missouri State University-West Plains.
