2009's Elston Makes Pick

Derek Elston, a Top 75 player in the junior class according to Scout.com, won't go far from home. As offers began rolling in, one Big Ten power took steps to lock him up.

The Indiana Hoosiers are on the board in the Class of 2009. Derek Elston, Scout.com's No. 69 prospect in the junior class selected the Hoosiers after looking at a number of Big Ten offers, including Purdue.

"He actually committed to IU last night," Tipton (Ind.) High coach Travis Daugherty told Scout.com Monday morning.

Elston's got a reputation as a hard-nosed, rugged power forward. As a sophomore last year, Elston led his team to a 12-10 record and was the area leader in rebounding at 12 a game and tossed in 14.9 points.

"I think his versatility is one thing that everyone has identified as a strength of his," Daugherty said. "They've done some comparing with (Lance) Stemler as a really aggressive, tenacious rebounder; a really active guy capable of providing a great compliment to the other kinds of players they have."

According to the Kokomo Journal, Elston shot 49% from the field and 74% at the line.

The Hoosiers pursued Elston very hard and were intent on locking him down early. Daugherty said Elston was impressed with their vision for his player. "Obviously Derek had a lot of really high interest from a lot of places. In the end, he just felt like that was the right fit for him."

"They laid out a clear picture of the goals they had for him and he had a specific fit for the goals they set and what he wants to do."
