McDonald Makes It Happen Late Night

A good portion of the country woke up to the news Wednesday morning. Top 100 prospect Phillip McDonald ended his recruitment before taking all his scheduled official visits.

The New Mexico Lobos have secured a major commitment from a Top 100 player. Late Tuesday night, Cypress Springs shooting guard Phillip McDonald selected the Lobos. The 6-foot-5 McDonald is's No. 78 prospect overall and 18th ranked shooting guard.

"I'm calling to tell you he made his commitment last night to the New Mexico Lobos," McDonald's brother Terrence relayed in a message. "10 p.m. central tonight; he's a Lobo."

The news comes on the heels of a scheduled visit to Lawrence, Kan., to see the Jayhawks this weekend. McDonald won't be making the trip now. He also had scholarship offers from Oklahoma, Oregon and Cincinnati.

McDonald's summer traveling team coach Chris Walker, a former Villanova standout and college coach, is now an assistant for Steve Alford's team. McDonald told Houston-based scout Jim Hicks that Alford and assistant Craig Neal presence at his summer games was a huge selling point.

McDonald now joins power forward Will Brown, shooting guard Curtis Dennis and power forward Isaiah Rusher in the Lobos outstanding 2008 recruiting class. Three of the four prospects have ties to Walker and the T-Mac All-Stars.
