Cheek Proves He's One Of The Best

Don't bet against Dominic Cheek. The talented 2009 wing proved his critics wrong, as he competed and out played majority of his class during summer ball. He's riding that great play to some big time interest.

Dominic Cheek is a betting man. The 6-foot-5, 180-pound shooting guard made a friendly wager with his AAU coach prior to the summer, and there's no doubt that Cheek won the bet.

"It was the best summer I've ever had," Cheek said. "Before the summer started I told my coach that I had a big goal and I promised him I was going to be one of the best players in the entire country. Me and him made a little bet about it.

"I just competed against everybody that were supposed to be the top players. I knew I had something to prove to everybody and to prove that I was one of the top players. Every tournament that I went to I played my heart out for everybody because I want to be one of the top players in the country, too."

Based on his performances with the Playaz, Cheek certainly proved himself against the top prospects in the 2009 class. He made a big move in's post-summer rankings, as he jumped up to No. 7 overall in the class.

With great play comes great rewards, so it's not surprising that he's hearing from the majority of the top schools. He rattled off a list of North Carolina, Kansas, Syracuse, Rutgers, Ohio State, Georgetown, Wake Forest, Kentucky, Illinois, Villanova and Texas.

Cheek Gets Strong Interest
He has already taken unofficial visits to a few schools on his list. His most recent visit was this past weekend to Wake Forest, where he got to take in their football game against Nebraska, play pick-up ball and meet the team.

"It was nice," Cheek said about the visit. "I got to meet Ty Walker, Al-Farouq and Tony Woods. I had fun with them and I played with them.

"At first I thought it was just going to be alright, but when I started hanging out with the players and everything I thought it was great. I liked it and I met a lot of people there."

The Jersey City (N.J.) St. Anthony's product has also been to nearby Villanova. The Wildcats are among his most aggressive pursuers and they watched him work out at his school on Monday.

"Villanova has been showing a lot of interest in me," Cheek said. "I've visited there, too, back in July. It was nice there and I got to meet the team and the coach. Coach Wright, he's a good person."

Cheek would like to set up a few more unofficial visits, but he isn't sure when he is going to fit them in to his schedule. He also mentioned that he won't necessarily wait until his senior year to make a commitment.

"I might be making my decision soon," Cheek said. "It all depends on what is best for my family and I'm going to talk to Coach Hurley and see what he thinks about it."
