National: McClure Keys VC Playaz

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Vince Carter Playaz had the depth and the DC Stars didn't. When it was all over, fatigue factored into the equation and the deeper Playaz outlasted the Stars to win the National Division championship at the Charlie Weber.

McClure Key For Vince Carter Playaz

David McClure scored 19 points in the Vince Carter Playaz 62-56 win over the DC Stars in the American Division Championship at the Charlie Weber. Last year, Jim Salmon's bunch captured two titles. This year, he entered just one team but managed to come away with a championship.

You could almost call McClure the Playaz unofficial MVP for the event for the Playaz. He swapped high-scoring duties with junior JR Smith but it was his savvy that seemed to be the biggest factor for the Playaz.

McClure is one of those do-it-all guys. He rebounds, he passes and he uses his sweet touch to score. But maybe more important than anything else, McClure had help off the bench.

After three days of playing in some hot gyms, fatigue was setting in with both squads. Unfortunately for the DC Stars, they didn't have nearly as many answers off the bench as the Playaz. The Stars, a team comprised solely of players from Bishop O'Connell High, rode junior forward Brian Johnson as far as they could.

Johnson's 21 points in the title game made him the high scorer and he really was able to get a lot accomplished. But, you could tell that he was out of gas. Teammate Freddie Stanback had a terrific game as well, especially in the first half. He finished with 16.
