Charlie Weber: Next In Line

Three weeks ago we used the Charlie Weber Fall Invitational to see a bevy of underclassmen. From Josh Hairston to Quddus Bellow, we caught up with some big names from the next wave of youngsters.

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The month of September is turning into a great opportunity to get a head start with the younger generations. We spent the better part of a day trying to mine the Charlie Weber Fall Invitational for talent from the junior, sophomore and freshman classes.

  • Rodney Magruder, SF, DC Assault – Wasn't at his best in the single game we saw but the book on him is that he's improving his perimeter package.
  • Javon Farrell, SG, DC Assault – This kid is a leaper and his athleticism takes him places.
  • Kevin Thomas, PF, Bounce – He's a bit undersized but the kid has a motor and at 6-foot-5+ he's powering through defenders.
  • Ian Hummer, PF, Va. Rapids – Top scholar is a lower-level version of Kevin Love when it comes to dishing out assists via the outlet pass.

  • Josh Hairston, SF/PF, DC Assault – Most talk about him as a PF but from what we saw he's got a chance to become a prototypical small forward. He's got bounce and his jumper is coming on strong!
  • Tyler Thornton, PG, DC Assault – He can play off the ball as well but once its in his hands his D.C. Assault team took on a different complexion.
  • Maxie Esho, PF, DC Assault – Since the spring he's made strides with his game and he flashed a shot blocking element we didn't know he possessed.
  • Jeff James, SF, BRYC Tar Heels – Our first look at him was a good one. He's got bounce and a teammate Max Lenox who can flow it from downtown.
  • Daryl Traynham, PG, DC Assault – He ran with the older squad and though he wasn't as sharp as we've seen him before, you always know who's team it is when he's done.

    Bellow Bursts Onto Scene
  • Quddus Bellow, SG, NC Athletics– Outstanding looking athlete who launches himself at the rim and roams the court confidently. Chance to be big time.

Sure, he hasn't played a high school game yet but that'll come soon enough. Won't take long for him to distinguish himself as a top talent from the state of North Carolina.

  • Delante Daniels, SG, Team Select (N.C.) – Last Leesville Road product to play in college was Shawan Robinson (Clemson). "Bishop" is a smooth operator. Teammate Dezmine Wells (Word of God) is another one to watch.

Hairston has interest from Ohio State, Maryland, Wake Forest, Virginia, Virginia Tech and Georgetown. The Buckeyes were in town last week checking on him. …
