Up Close With A Future Hawkeye
Nick, when did you know your recruitment would take off?
"The Jerry Mullens' camp is when everyone started seeing me. I put on 10 pounds over the summertime and the strength helped me a lot. I opened some eyes."
Exactly when did you decide on Iowa?
"After this weekend. I was on a plane and I thought this was it. This is the school where I should be at."
What Did it for Iowa?
"I think they put a lot of time into this. They wanted me pretty bad and I could tell that this weekend. I know what they need and I think I can go in there and have a major impact. That was the major factor. And, the players were great and they treated me like I was part of the family. The have a young coaching staff. He'd be a great person to learn from and I want to coach high school basketball one day."
Who finished second?
Why would FSU have appealed to you?
"If I would have committed there we would have had the No. 1 recruiting class in the nation; if not No. 2. We could have changed the ACC around. I think they'll start to do that next year. Leonard [Hamilton] can coach and the same with Stan Jones. The ACC is changing this year and it's not as strong as it's been in the past."
"Coach Davis is a player's coach too. The players were good and they loved their basketball down there. It's a basketball state. They had a good run last year and they'll win too."
Arizona to Iowa, what were the ties?
"My mom was actually born in Iowa. I have a lot of family back there. My grandpa actually coached high school basketball in Iowa. "
On the future of Iowa basketball
"We should be real good. We already have two other commitments. From what I've heard about Mike Henderson he was competing with all the top guards in the camps and he's a sleeper. If we get Pierre back we can make a run in the Big Ten and the national tournament."
What is your current basketball situation?
" I want to go in this January and practice and go to school and do everything except play games. I'll be almost a veteran and that's a big advantage."
(Dewitz will have three years remaining and isn't playing this season.) It's got to be tough, right?
"So far it hasn't been but I know when everyone starts getting into the games I'm sure I'll miss it."
