Big Weekend For Loyola

The Loyola Marymount Lions pull in a couple of very good prospects, a wing from Southern California and a guard from Oregon...

Loyola Marymount received some excellent news this weekend, as two of the top West Coast uncommitted prospects decided to verbal to Rodney Tention's program.

Ameer Shamsud-din, 6-2 SR PG/SG Portland (Ore.) Benson, and Wendell Wright, 6-5 SR SF/SG Lakewood (Calif.) Mayfair, both gave verbal commitments to the Lions in the past couple days.

Shamsud-din is a skilled guard who might play either spot in college. He's got a great frame and a solid stroke to the stripe. I spoke with him a bit about his decision.

"It was a good environment for me," said Shamsud-din. "I like the staff -- they have good people. I really think it'll benefit me the most."

Shamsud-din said his other finalists were Nevada and Oregon State.

Wendell Wright is one of the more interesting wing prospects in the west. A good athlete, his skill level and feel for the game have really improved in the last year. He had an excellent summer and showed considerable development over the last year.

I spoke with Wright's father about the decision and he said that Wendell is very comfortable with the environment at LMU, as well as the coaching staff.

Portland and SMU were the other finalists for Wright.
