The greatest thing about recruiting, from a coaching standpoint, is when a plan comes together. On Tuesday morning, Rex Walters and his Florida Atlantic program saw the fruits of their labor unite.
Punta Gorda 3-star small forward Dago Pena and Arcadio (Fla.) Desoto shooting guard Shavon Shine selected the FAU program. Pena made one visit – to FAU – but was being recruited by Ole Miss, VCU and Michigan. Shine's interest came from UAB, Western Carolina, Western Kentucky and Charleston Southern.
The idea all along was to get the pair to FAU and that was Walters' approach. "The kids are very, very good friends," Florida Rams skipper Matt Ramker said. "We agreed that if the right school came about for both to go to they would go together. Independently they were going to pick what was best for each one."
The consensus at decision time was that FAU presented great opportunities for each. Pena, the higher rated of the two, has a smooth game that improved as the summer went on. Shine's a legit wing threat with a deep stroke. Both from Florida, both with the ability to help early.
"Coach Walters, he's made the state of Florida a priority," Ramker said. "He knows there's talent down here and its great to start in your own backyard. He made these two a huge priority."
