Elijah Johnson, 6-2 JR PG/SG Las Vegas (Nev.) Cheyenne, is one of the elite guard prospects in the country for 2009. An explosive athlete, Johnson has the ball skills to play either the one or two in college.
I spoke with Johnson recently and asked about the programs that have been showing interest in him.
"I haven't thought about it too much yet – so I don't really have a list," said Johnson. "But some of the schools that have sent coaches out to my school are Texas, Kansas, USC, UCLA, Michigan, UNLV, Ohio State and Arizona State."
I asked Johnson if any school stands out for him at the moment.
"I don't have a leader, but I was impressed that Kansas showed interest in my academic situation," said Johnson. "They didn't really come to see me play, but came by to make sure I was taking care of my academics. That made an impression."
I asked Johnson if any schools have offered a scholarship.
"UNLV and Arizona State have offered," said Johnson. "I think a couple others have as well, but I'm not real sure."
Johnson talked a little about the issues he'll consider when making his choice.
"The relationship with the coach is the number one thing," said Johnson. "Location doesn't matter – I'm willing to go anywhere. Early playing time is a factor – I want to play. And televised games are another thing."
Johnson has been thinking a bit about the timing of his decision.
"I'm aiming for a decision next spring," said Johnson. "But it might go to my senior year."
