Parents Watch Duke In London
Luol Deng did not take his scheduled official visit to George Washington last weekend. In fact, it's likely that if he's to see the Colonials campus, he'll have to do it on his own dime because he's about to schedule his last visit.
To recap, Deng has seen campuses in Columbia and Charlottesville. He'll be in Bloomington, Ind., this weekend (along with Charlie Villanueva) for a chit chat with the Hoosiers. On the horizon is likely to be a visit with Fairfield and a trip to Duke.
Fairfield, a 1985 Villanova national champ like underdog to the likes of Duke, Virginia and Missouri, fits in neatly to Deng's recruiting equation. First and foremost, Deng's brother plays for Fairfield. Secondly, head coach Tim O'Toole is a former Duke assistant, which means no less than three coaches with Duke roots are chasing Deng.
Like we said, it's a big weekend in Bloomington. The Hoosiers have two Top Five players from the same high school team on their campus. For Deng, it'll be an educational trip. "Indiana is the big unknown," Blair Academy coach Joe Mantegna said. "Things will be a lot more clear after this weekend. That's the one he doesn't know a thing about."
Well, while Deng continues to educate himself in the United States, his parents got a little Duke education, European style. Deng's parents live in London, and according to Mantegna, did take in a Duke game on the Blue Devils recent exhibition game stint abroad. No way Duke's trip was planned with that in mind, but the stroke of luck probably doesn't hurt the Devils chances.
Mantegna says Deng will end his recruitment in a few weeks. "The decision will be ready to be made the first weekend in November."
