Joseph Picks Big Ten Program

There aren't many 2008 prospects left and you can add Devoe Joseph among the committed, as he made his decision late Wednesday night.

Vince Taylor's been recruiting Canada since his days as an assistant at Louisville. Back in the day, Taylor landed Terry Licorice for the Cardinals. This time around the former NBA assistant went back up north and recruited another player from Ro Russell's Grassroots Canada squad.

On Wednesday night as the signing period closed, Taylor and Tubby Smith's Golden Gophers scored a buzzer beater. Devoe Joseph,'s No. 97 prospect in the nation, selected the Golden Gophers over Texas, Virginia Tech, Kansas and Vanderbilt.

"It came down to him being comfortable," Joseph's AAU coach Ro Russell said. "They had been recruiting him since coach Tubby Smith first saw our AAU team play in Pittsburgh. He came up to Toronto the very next day. He's been up to Toronto about six times and has kept in great touch with Devoe, his father and myself."

"He felt comfortable with them in terms of being able to make an impact," Russell continued. "He likes how Tubby is building the program and Devoe is intrigued and wants to help him build the program as well."

Joseph, who checked in at No. 21 at the shooting guard spot, will be used as a scoring point guard" according to Russell, and they expect Joseph to get plenty of playing time as soon as he gets to campus.

"He just felt that, that would be the best place for him to develop and get to play a lot and help build a program. I've known those coaches for years and he felt comfortable with what they had to offer."

During his first recruiting season as a coach at Minnesota, Smith and his staff put together a heck of recruiting haul. To go with Joseph, they also picked up Ralph Sampson, Colton Iverson, Paul Carter and Devron Bostick.
