Vanderbilt Adds 2009 Wing

Kevin Stallings' Vanderbilt Commodores are on the board in the Class of 2009. An in-state prospect is headed to the SEC!

The Vanderbilt Commodores moved swiftly to add a wing from the Class of 2009. John Jenkins, a 6-foot-4 wing out of Gallatin (Tenn.) Camp Station, committed to the Commodores Monday morning.

"I was thinking that if any (bigger school like UNC) would have called would I change my mind about Vanderbilt?," Jenkins said. "When I knew I wouldn't change my mind then I knew it was Vanderbilt. I can play right away and maybe have a chance to start."

The Commodores sold Jenkins on replacing Shan Foster, a wing who has turned in an outstanding career in Nashville. "He's leaving. I'll be around that area as a shooting guard; that's what I got out of (the conversation)."

As a junior, Jenkins is averaging 30 points per game and 8 boards.

At first he wasn't sure how big the educational component would factor into his decision. However, at the end of the day he was surprised how difficult it would have been to pass on the opportunity at a prestigious school like Vandy.

"The education is great. It's close to home. Education played more into it than I thought it would at first. It played a big part, a huge part."

Tennessee, Kentucky and a host of other programs were beginning to warm up to him.
