Winthrop Nabs No. 2

Gregg Marshall and his Winthrop program now have two commitments. Winthrop landed one of the sleepers who emerged at this year's Nike Peach Jam.

Martin Is No. 2 For Winthrop

At the 2002 Nike Peach Jam, Torrell Martin was in the process of "blowing up." However, an injury stole some of his thunder while playing for the Peach Jam Select team.

"I was on the break and I was going to flush it down and someone cut in front of me and landed and hyper extended it," Martin said. "I had to rest for a whole game but came back and it still hurt."

Martin came back but he had already made his mark. He succeeded in creating a buzz and coaches took note. He didn't enter the even thinking this was his chance to earn a scholarship but he quickly learned the value of his performance. "They said that if I was going to do something that this was where it would happen."

Martin visited Appalachian State and also listed Chattanooga and the College of Charleston among him final schools. But, it was Winthrop that made the greatest impression on him.

"Basically, I just really felt like I fit in there better," Martin said. "It was a homey environment. I want to help continue the streak. I've always wanted to do that." Martin speaks of continuing to help Winthrop advance to the NCAA Tournament.

"I bring a lot of enthusiasm, scoring ability and the ability to defend – the will to win basically."

Martin is the second member of the Class of 2003 to commit to Winthrop. 6-4 point guard Justin Harper of Bandys High in North Carolina, was the first player to pick Winthrop.
