Junior Big Man Drawing Interest

Joe Burton sat out last summer with an injury and added some weight as a result. But the junior big man is in much better shape today and college coaches are taking notice...

Joe Burton, 6-7 JR C Hemet (Calif.) West Valley, is a big-bodied post with nice passing skills. Burton was injured last summer and, as a result, put on a lot of weight. At one point, he was up to 330 pounds. However, he's been watching his diet and training hard, and he's now down to 280. His West Valley team will play in the CIF finals on Saturday at the Honda Center against Perris High.

I spoke with Burton over the weekend and asked about the programs he's been hearing from to date.

"UCLA, Florida, Tennessee, Texas, Central Florida, Uconn, Arizona, Miami, New Mexico, Illinois, Villanova, San Diego State and Purdue," said Burton. "I'm really open right now."

I asked Burton which schools have extended scholarship offers.

"San Diego State and Central Florida have offered," said Burton.

When asked if he has a sense for which schools have been recruiting him the hardest, Burton replied, "UCLA, Purdue, Central Florida and Arizona."

Burton talked a little about the issues he'll consider when making his choice.

"The education, whether the team runs its offense around the big man and the coaching," said Burton. "Location doesn't really matter."

I asked Burton when he thought he might make his decision.

"Probably sometime next year," said Burton.
