Junior College Star To The Big 12

Tyrone Appleton, a highly touted junior college prospect, offered up a verbal commitment to a national power Monday night.

The Kansas Jayhawks added another piece to their backcourt rotation Monday afternoon. Midland Junior College guard Tyrone Appleton made it official: he'll play in Lawrence.

The 6-foot-3 inch Appleton, a one-time Virginia Tech signee, averages 12.5 points and 6 assists for his highly regarded junior college team.

In addition to KU, Kentucky, Iowa State and Texas were tracking him hard.

"We met a lot of great coaches and visited a lot of great programs but I basically felt and Tyrone felt it was time to make a decision," Appleton's legal guardian James Dye said.

The Jayhawks now have Travis Releford, Mario Little, Quintrell Thomas and the Morris Twins in their 2008 recruiting class.

"I think they see Ty stepping in athletically in the program and being able to continue to roll. It wasn't a situation where he was looking to get 40 minutes a game or to be told he'd step in and be the guy."

Appleton signed with Virginia Tech coming out of high school. He didn't qualify. "From there he went to Midland," Dye said. "I think he's very satisfied with Kansas. He went through the process and when he was ready to make his decision he had evaluated everything."
